A Farmer's Guide to Boom Sprayer Nozzle Selection for Herbicide Application

A Farmer's Guide to Boom Sprayer Nozzle Selection for Herbicide Application

Walk into any ag supply shop and you will see a wall of nozzles. Flat fan, extended range, air induction, turbo flood, drift-reducing — it is easy to grab whatever is cheapest and call it a day. But the nozzle is the single most important part of your sprayer when it comes to getting good results. The wrong choice wastes chemical, damages crops, or both.


We have spent enough years around sprayers to know that most herbicide failures trace back to nozzle selection, not the chemical itself. Here is a practical guide to getting it right.


Droplet size is the starting point


Every nozzle produces a range of droplet sizes, measured in microns. Coarse droplets (300 microns and up) fall fast and resist drift. Fine droplets (under 200 microns) cover more surface area but drift easily in a light breeze.


For pre-emergence herbicides that need to reach the soil surface, medium to coarse droplets are usually best. The goal is coverage without drift. For post-emergence contact herbicides, you want better leaf coverage, so medium droplets are more appropriate. But if the label says "use coarse or coarser," do not ignore it. Some herbicides are volatile and cause crop injury when applied as fine droplets.


Flat fan nozzles: the workhorse


Standard flat fan nozzles produce a tapered spray pattern that overlaps to give even coverage. They are reliable, cheap, and widely available. But they produce a lot of fine droplets, so they are not ideal in windy conditions or near sensitive crops.


Extended range flat fans improve on the basic design by maintaining a good pattern across a wider pressure range. If you need to slow down or speed up and keep consistent coverage, these are a better choice than standard flats.


Air induction nozzles


Air induction (AI) nozzles draw air into the spray stream and produce large droplets with trapped air bubbles inside. Those bubbles help the droplet stick to the leaf surface rather than bouncing off. The large droplet size means significantly less drift.


For most herbicide applications on row crops, AI nozzles are the best all-around choice. They are not perfect for every situation — coverage on dense canopies can be slightly worse — but they handle wind conditions better than any other nozzle type. If you are spraying within 50 meters of a neighboring crop, AI nozzles should be your default.Turbo flood and turbo teejet


Turbo flood nozzles spray a wide, coarse pattern at low pressure. They are common for broadcast applications of pre-emergence herbicides and fertilizer. Coverage is not as even as a flat fan, but the drift risk is very low.


Turbo TeeJet (TT) nozzles are popular for a reason. They combine the wide pressure range of an extended range flat fan with the coarse droplet structure of a flood nozzle. They work well across a variety of applications and are a good choice for farmers who want one nozzle that does most jobs adequately.


Pressure matters


No matter what nozzle you pick, running it at the wrong pressure ruins the pattern. Every nozzle has a recommended pressure range. Below that range, the spray pattern collapses into streaks. Above it, you get too many fine droplets.


Check your pressure at the boom, not just at the pump. Long hose runs can drop pressure by 10–20 percent by the time the spray reaches the end nozzles.


When to replace nozzles


Nozzles wear out. It happens slowly, so you might not notice until you see a streak in the field. Abrasive herbicides and fertilizers accelerate the wear. Stainless steel and ceramic nozzles last significantly longer than brass or plastic.


A simple rule: replace all nozzles at the start of each season. Compare the flow rate of each nozzle to the spec for a new one. If any nozzle is flowing more than 10 percent over the rated rate, replace the full set. Uneven wear across the boom produces uneven application, and uneven application means either wasted chemical or failed control.


One more thing


Read the herbicide label before you pick a nozzle. Seriously. The label will tell you the recommended droplet size category and application volume. Match your nozzle to that, and you are already ahead of most operators.
